He won’t pay so I won’t clear the snow I don’t care that he’s elderly’

A man has taken to the internet for advice after being chastised by his wife – because he refused to help his elderly neighbour clear his drive of snow unless he is paid

A man left his family divided after he refused to help his elderly neighbour clear the snow from his drive unless he was paid, as his wife said he should have done it for free.

Sharing his story anonymously, the man said that he had never got on with his neighbour and he resented his constant complaints, about his dog, noise, or whatever else was annoying the elderly man that day.

Then when it snowed the neighbour, who is in his 80s, turned to the man for help and asked him to clear his drive – but the man said he wouldn’t do it unless he was paid.

The neighbour refused so the man didn’t help, but now his wife is saying he was in the wrong and should have done the work as the man was old and needed help.

Taking to Reddit, the man said: “This summer, he told us that my relationship with him was no longer friendly, and we were to be strictly neighbours for the rest of the time that we lived together.

“Last night we got our first big snow of the season. Instead of snow blowing his driveway like I usually do, I snow blowed mine and went back inside.

“20 minutes later, he texted me saying that he was going to breakfast with his friend and needed his driveway snow blowed so he could get out.

“I responded that I would no longer be doing his driveway for free since he had said that our relationship was no longer friendly. I offered to do his driveway for £151 ($200), or I said he could pay one of the kids that live in the neighbourhood.

“He got pissed and told me that he didn’t have time to coordinate with the neighbourhood kids and that he needed his driveway snow blowed. I told him I would do it for £151. He said he refused to pay me to do his driveway. So I told him I wouldn’t do it.

After seeking advice online, other Reddit users rushed to the man’s defence and said he did nothing wrong.

One said: “People need to realise being old isn’t an excuse to behave like an a*e. Would you feel bad if he was in his 20s? Nope.

“He made his bed now he can lie in it.”

And a second wrote: “My son shovels out the elderly neighbour’s driveway, which is crazy long and steep to boot. She gives him fifty bucks and tells him he’s the most handsome boy in the world.

“I’m just saying this is the minimum standard. Tell your neighbour you’ll do it for 200 or fifty bucks and being told you’re the most handsome boy in the world.”

While a third added: “If he wants neighbourly kindness, he has to be a kind neighbour. He made it very clear he wasn’t interested in that kind of friendly relationship, so you don’t owe him more than he asked for, which was strictly neighbours.
